Fishkeeping

Hydroponics and Fishkeeping are easy to combine. A land plant feature is that they prefer nitrate as nitrogen source. On the other hand water plants prefer ammonium. And unfortunately nitrate is the last step in amino acid degradation and so accumulates in the water. Therefore land plants are good filters for nitrate (if they are big enough). Additionally they make a good fish tank background.

In the year 2002 i started my personal website www.nico-manicone.de in German. One article was about the Hamburger Mattenfilter, a fishkeeping filter quite popular in Germany. The web server logs displayed that a lot of non German speakers accessed this article. Therefore i decided to create an English translation which you are reading now. ;-)
